Our Top Pick Things to Do in NYC During Christmas
1. Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree
- Location: Rockefeller Center, 45 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10111.
- Lighting ceremony date: December 4th, 2024.
The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting is an iconic New York City tradition. Every year, a towering evergreen, often around 80 feet tall, is selected and transported to Rockefeller Center, where it becomes a symbol of the holiday season. This year's tree will be lit on December 4th, 2024, and will remain illuminated until the new year.
The tree lighting ceremony is a beloved event for locals and tourists alike. After the official ceremony on December 4th, the tree will be lit daily from 5 am to midnight, with extended hours on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.
The tree is decked with over 50,000 multicolored LED lights and crowned with a stunning Swarovski star. Designed by architect Daniel Libeskind in 2018, the star weighs 900 pounds and features 3 million sparkling crystals.
2. Take a Holiday Nostalgia Train Ride
- Dates: December 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th.
Experience a ride on this vintage subway train decorated for the holidays. Running on select weekends in December, it features retro cars from the 1930s and 1940s, providing a nostalgic trip through the city.
The nostalgic journey begins at the 2nd Avenue Station (F line) and travels along 6th Avenue up to 125th Street. Trains run from 10 AM to 5 PM, with multiple departures throughout the day. Perhaps the best part? This unique experience costs only a regular MetroCard swipe ($2.90), with no advance reservations required – though this means access is on a first-come, first-served basis.
For the best experience, arrive early in the day, preferably before noon or after 3 PM, to avoid peak crowds.
3. Ice Skating
When considering things to do in NYC for Christmas, ice skating at Rockefeller Center is an unforgettable holiday experience. While it's a bit of a splurge (around $73 per person for an hour during peak season, plus $11 for skate rentals), gliding across the ice beneath the iconic Christmas tree is truly magical.
Be sure to book your tickets in advance, as the lines can be incredibly long, especially during peak times like evenings in the Christmas week. Even with tickets, arrive early and double-check the time slots of those ahead of you in line to ensure you don't miss your designated time.
If Rockefeller Center isn't in your budget, there are other fantastic options. Wollman Rink in Central Park and the rink at Bryant Park offer equally memorable outdoor skating experiences, often at a lower price point.
