If you have 5-8 hours: This is your sweet spot for a quick trip to Doha. Think about booking a "Discover Qatar" guided city tour. You can find their kiosk right in the airport. They handle all the logistics and guarantee you'll be back in time for your flight.
If you have 9-12 hours: Now you have time to see the main sights without rushing. Your plan: Start at Souq Waqif, then take a short walk to the Museum of Islamic Art. After, stroll along the Corniche (the waterfront) to get that perfect photo of the city skyline.
This is the first and most important question every traveler asks. The simple answer is: yes, you can absolutely leave Doha airport during a layover.
But this all depends on two key things: your passport and your layover time.
Qatar makes it easy for most travelers to leave the airport. You have two main options.
Visa-Free Entry: Good news! Citizens from over 100 countries can enter Qatar completely visa-free. You don't need to do any paperwork in advance. You simply go to immigration, get a stamp, and you are free to go. Check the official "Visit Qatar" website to see if your country is on the visa-free list.
Free Transit Visa: What if your country isn't on the list? No problem. If you are flying with Qatar Airways, you can get a free Transit Visa. This visa is designed for layovers and is valid for a stay of 5 to 96 hours.
Note: You must apply for this visa before you travel. Be sure to apply on the Qatar Airways website at least 7 days before your flight.
Just because you can leave doesn't always mean you should. A 4-hour layover is not enough time to go into the city.
We only recommend leaving the airport if you have at least 6 hours between your flights. A layover of 8 hours or more is ideal.
Why so long? Here’s a realistic breakdown of your time:
Deplaning & Immigration: 45 - 60 minutes (this can be fast, but lines get long)
Travel to the City (e.g., Souq Waqif): 20 - 30 minutes (by taxi or Metro)
Actual Exploring: 1.5 - 2 hours (on a 6-hour layover)
Travel Back to Airport: 20 - 30 minutes
A 6-hour layover gives you about 1.5 hours in the city, which is just enough to see Souq Waqif. If you have 8 hours, you'll have a much more comfortable 3-4 hours to explore.
Not enough time to leave? You're in luck. Hamad International Airport is consistently ranked one of the best airports in the world, and it’s an experience all by itself.
The Orchard: This is the airport's jaw-dropping centerpiece, located in the North Node (near Concourse C). It's a massive indoor tropical garden with over 300 trees and 25,000 plants, all under a giant glass roof. It’s a peaceful place to walk around and a must-see.
The "Lamp Bear": You can't (and won't) miss this. In the heart of the main duty-free hall, there is a 23-foot, bright yellow teddy bear with its head under a lamp. It's the airport's most famous landmark and the perfect spot for a selfie.
Explore the Art: The airport is filled with world-class sculptures. Keep an eye out for "Small Lie" by KAWS (the large wooden figure) and the interactive "Other Worlds" playgrounds by Tom Otterness.

The airport provides free Quiet Rooms with dim lighting and comfortable reclining loungers. These are the best spots for a no-cost nap. They are separated by gender (men and women) and are located throughout the terminal. Look for signs near gates A3, B2, C11, D5, and E3.
If you need total privacy, this is your answer. You can rent a private, quiet sleep pod or small cabin by the hour. It’s perfect for a deep sleep and recharge.
There are two locations: one in the main duty-free area (South Node) and another near gates C30 & C31 (North Node).
Feeling grimy after a long flight? You have options to refresh.
Your all-in-one solution is the Oryx Airport Hotel's Vitality Wellbeing & Fitness Centre. You do not need to be a hotel guest to use these facilities; you can simply buy a pass at their desk.
For about 90 QAR (approximately $27 USD), you can get a pass for a hot shower, which includes towels and toiletries. If you want more, a full pass is available for about 175 QAR (approximately $51 USD). This gives you a 6-hour pass that includes the gym, a 25-meter swimming pool, a hydrotherapy tub (jacuzzi), and, of course, the shower facilities.

You don't always need to book in advance. After you pass through immigration, head to the "Discover Qatar" kiosk in the main arrivals hall to sign up for the next available tour.

Stop 1: Souq Waqif
Take the Metro or a taxi directly here. This is the heart and soul of Doha. After these three stops, you can easily grab a taxi or head back to the Souq Waqif or National Museum Metro stations to get to the airport.

You must book this deal when you are booking your flight on the Qatar Airways website. Do not book a regular flight and try to add this later.
Tip: You cannot access your checked luggage on a stopover. You must pack everything you need for your hotel stay (a change of clothes, toiletries) in your carry-on bag.

If you want to explore the city without your carry-on, you can store it at the airport. Look for the "Travel Hub" luggage storage service, which is located in the Metro station area (a short walk from the main terminal). Be sure to check their hours, as they are not always open 24/7.
Wi-Fi
The airport has excellent free Wi-Fi that is fast, unlimited, and easy to connect to. Just search for the "#HIAQatar" network on your device.
Currency
Qatar's official currency is the Qatari Riyal (QAR).
However, you will be fine with just a credit card in most places. The airport, the Metro, taxis, and larger restaurants all accept cards (like Visa and Mastercard). It is a good idea to have a small amount of cash if you plan to bargain for souvenirs or buy snacks from small vendors at the Souq Waqif.
Taxis
All official airport taxis (the turquoise-colored "Karwa" cars) accept credit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. You don't need to have cash, which makes getting into the city very easy.
