Social worker Rhaune Laslett is widely credited with organising the first outdoor street festival in Notting Hill in 1966. Her aim was to promote cultural unity and create an event for local children from diverse backgrounds. This modest children's street fair laid the foundations for the Carnival we know today.

The main event days for Notting Hill Carnival 2025 are:
Sunday is traditionally more family-focused. While still incredibly lively, the atmosphere is a bit more relaxed.
The Children's Parade takes centre stage, with young masqueraders showcasing their incredible costumes. There's often an official opening ceremony in the morning (around 10 AM). You'll also find 'Dutty Mas' or 'Fun Mas' where revellers get playfully splattered with paint and powder.
Parades often kick off around 10:00 AM - 10:30 AM, with sound systems usually running from midday until around 7:00 PM. Things generally wind down by 8:30 PM.
Bank Holiday Monday is the main event, the Adult Parade Day! This is when the Carnival reaches its peak intensity with larger bands, more elaborate costumes, and the biggest crowds.
The main adult parade features countless masquerade bands, incredible floats, and an explosion of energy. Sound systems will be in full swing, and the party atmosphere is infectious.
Parades often start around 10:30 AM, with sound systems from midday to 7:00 PM, and the event typically concludes by 8:30 PM.
Note: While Sunday and Monday are the main parade days, the festivities often kick off on Saturday evening with Panorama. This is the UK's biggest steel pan competition, a musical event held at Emslie Horniman's Pleasance Park (usually a ticketed event, so check official channels for confirmation and tickets closer to the date).
"Mas" is short for masquerade. Mas bands are organised groups who design and create themed costumes, often telling a story. They spend months, even all year, preparing their incredible creations. You can often pay to "play mas" with a band, meaning you get a costume and join them in the parade! Expect towering headdresses, intricate beadwork, vibrant feathers, and an explosion of colour.
The Pulse of the Party Dotted throughout the Carnival area, you'll find over 30 static sound systems. They are colossal stacks pumping out everything from soca, reggae, and dancehall to calypso, dub, funk, soul, and even house music.
Not to mention, Carnival's Anthem Music Soca (Soul of Calypso) and Calypso are the traditional sounds of the Caribbean carnival. Their infectious rhythms and often witty, topical lyrics are designed to make you move.

Notting Hill Carnival takes place in the streets of W10 and W11, covering areas of Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Park, and Kensal Road.
The official parade route for 2025 will be released by the organisers closer to the event. It's typically around 3.5 miles long. Keep an eye on the official Notting Hill Carnival website for the confirmed map. Last year, the adult parade often started near Westbourne Park tube station, moving down towards Westbourne Grove, then up Ladbroke Grove, and looping around Kensal Road.
Several Tube stations serve the area, but be warned: many will be exit-only, have closures, or be much busier than usual.
Some likely affected stations are Notting Hill Gate, Royal Oak, Westbourne Park, Ladbroke Grove, and Holland Park. Some might close entirely at certain times.
So, plan your route in advance and check the Transport for London website for the most up-to-date travel information and restrictions before you travel. It's often better to use stations a short walk away and approach the Carnival area on foot.
Many bus routes in West London will be diverted or terminate earlier than usual due to extensive road closures. Again, the TfL website will be your go-to source for the latest details on affected bus services.
Honestly, don't even think about driving. Extensive road closures are in place from early Saturday or Sunday morning until Tuesday morning. Parking will be virtually non-existent.
Cycling is possible to the outskirts, but you'll need to walk your bike within the crowded Carnival footprint. Walking from a slightly more distant station or bus stop is often the least stressful option.
